Coast Guard, local agencies help rescue stranded teenagers

SARASOTA, Fla. — The Coast Guard is assisting in the rescue of two teenagers Saturday night in the vicinity of the upper Myakka River in the Flatford Preserve, approximately 30 miles east of Sarasota.

Watchstanders in the Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg command center were notified of the situation by Manatee County Sheriff’s Office at 7:52 p.m.

The report stated that two teenagers, 15 and 16, were in the swamp and became stranded Friday. Due to their location, they were unable to get out on foot.

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office launched a helicopter crew who located the two teenagers, however the crew was unable to hoist them.

A Coast Guard helicopter crew from Air Station St. Petersburg was launched at 8:30 p.m., Saturday, to assist in the rescue.
