Coast Guard, local agencies searching for overdue kayaker

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. — The Coast Guard, Jacksonville Beach Police Department, St. Johns County Sheriff's Office and Nassau County Sheriff’s Office are searching for an overdue kayaker Sunday in the vicinity of the Jacksonville Beach Pier, in Jacksonville Beach, Fla.

Missing is Garth Sangree, approximately 22 years old, Caucasian, six-feet and two inches tall, and weighing 160 pounds. He was reported to be aboard a lime green and white kayak.

Watchstanders in the Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville command center were notified of the situation at 2:40 p.m., by the Jacksonville Police Department.

The Coast Guard has issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast. A rescue crew from Station Mayport was launched at approximately 4 p.m., and arrived at the search area at 5:40 p.m. A crew aboard an HC-130 Hercules airplane from Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater, Fla., has been launched. A crew aboard an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Savannah, Ga., was also launched at approximately 6 p.m.

Local agencies involved in the search include members of the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office and Nassau County Sheriff's Office.
