Coast Guard, local police nab intoxicated boater in Rhode Island

BOSTON – The Coast Guard apprehended a 46-year-old intoxicated boater Thursday at about 1 a.m. in Jamestown Harbor, Rhode Island. Jamestown Police contacted watchstanders at Coast Guard Station Castle Hill requesting assistance in locating the powerboat Zero PSI, seen erratically leaving Jamestown Harbor and reportedly striking several other vessels. A 45-foot Response Boat Medium crew from Station Castle Hill launched to search for Zero PSI. The boat crew located the vessel near the Pell Bridge at about 12:44 a.m., took it in tow, and transferred the operator, David Howe of Jamestown, to shore.On land, a Coast Guard boarding officer administered a field sobriety test to Howe, which he failed.He was transferred to the Jamestown Police and issued a recreational boating under the influence citation. “Boating while intoxicated is not only illegal, but it's inexcusably dangerous,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Timothy Mirandi, the Coast Guard boarding officer on scene.  “In situations like these, we leverage our port partners and do everything in our power to quickly find, apprehend, and remove irresponsible boaters from our waterways.”
