SAN DIEGO — The Coast Guard medically evacuated a 34-year-old man approximately 145 miles southwest of San Diego, Monday.

At approximately 9:15 a.m. Friday, watchstanders at the 11th Coast Guard District, in Alameda, California, received a report from the crew of the 750-foot motor vessel Zen Noh Grain Magnolia stating that the master of the vessel was experiencing symptoms similar to a heart attack and needed assistance.

The Coast Guard duty flight surgeon recommended that the patient be medically evacuated and taken to a hospital for emergency care. At the time of the report, the vessel was more than 1,000 miles southwest of San Diego. Due to the distance from available assets and the master’s increasingly stable condition, the vessel diverted towards San Diego within range of Sector San Diego’s air assets.

A Coast Guard Sector San Diego MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter was launched at 5:25 a.m., arrived on scene, and safely hoisted the man at 7:09 a.m.

At approximately 8:15 a.m., the Jayhawk crew returned to Sector San Diego, where he was transferred to awaiting EMS.

He was taken to UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest. He was in stable condition.

The Zen Noh Grain Magnolia was transiting from New Orleans to Japan.

Weather on scene was six-foot seas and 15-knot winds.
