EMERALD ISLE, N.C. — The Coast Guard medevaced a man Friday 16 miles west of Emerald Isle after a boat carrying four people ran aground.
Watchstanders at Station Emerald Isle received a report at 4:18 p.m. that the 50-foot boat Final Approach out of Hilton Head, South Carolina, ran aground with four people aboard. One passenger, a 62-year-old man, had suffered a head injury and needed medical attention.
A 24-foot Special Purpose Craft-Shallow Water crew from Coast Guard Station Emerald Isle launched and arrived on scene at 4:38 p.m. to take the injured man and another passenger aboard. The boat crew arrived at Armstrong Marine in Hubert at 5 p.m. where awaiting EMS personnel transferred the man to Carteret Hospital in Morehead City.
"The crew of Station Emerald Isle did a fantastic job responding quickly to the report of the grounded vessel and injured passenger," said Senior Chief Petty Officer Aaron Wohlander, command duty officer at Sector North Carolina. "We always caution mariners to maintain situational awareness, both while navigating a vessel and as passengers."
Two passengers remain aboard, and a tow boat is en route.
No pollution was reported.
