BOSTON - A Coast Guard air crew transported an ill 68-year-old man from Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, today.
Watchstanders at the Coast Guard 1st District Command Center were notified at about 12 a.m. by Martha's Vineyard Hospital that the man was suffering from internal bleeding and needed immediate transport to a mainland medical facility.
With no local medical flight available, a Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew launched at 12:25 a.m., retrived the man from the island, and arrived safely on deck at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston at 1:55 a.m.
"We train to be ready and respond quickly at all hours." said Lt. Zephyr Mays, the responding rescue pilot at Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod. "This mission was seamless because of the cooperation between local agencies, both hospitals, and Coast Guard responders," he said.
