Coast Guard medevacs man from ravine near Coos Bay, Ore.

September 6, 2015

WARRENTON, Ore. — A Coast Guard aircrew rescued a man from a ravine after he sustained a leg injury near Coos Bay, Sunday.

An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station North Bend safely transferred the 23-year-old man to the air station at 4:45 p.m., where they were met by emergency medical personnel.

The man reportedly suffered a leg injury while operating an ATV at Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector North Bend received a call from Coos County Sheriff’s Department personnel at 3:45 p.m. requesting helicopter assistance for a medevac due to the man's inaccessible location.

“This case is a shining example of our strong partnerships with local search and rescue agencies,” said Lt. Cmdr. Matthew Walker, aircraft commander for the rescue. “We were called upon today to help with a unique situation, and we were more than happy to get this man to safety, even though he was not on the water.”

Emergency medical personnel transferred the injured man to Bay Area Hospital in Coos Bay for further medical care.

The weather at the time of the incident was reported to be clear skies with a temperature of 70 degrees.
