Coast Guard, Military Ocean Terminal personnel rescue 4 off rock jetty near Fort Macon, NC

April 16, 2016

WILMINGTON, N.C. — The Coast Guard rescued four people Saturday off a jetty near Fort Fisher Ferry Terminal. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector North Carolina received a report at approximately 3:50 p.m. that two men were stuck on the rock jetty trapped by high tide.

A 29-foot Rescue Boat-Small crew from Coast Guard Station Oak Island launched at approximately 4 p.m. The boat crew arrived on scene along with security personnel from Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Point at 4:12 p.m. and located the two men along with a father and son good Samaritans.  The good Samaritans attempted a rescue in their 14-foot boat when their own boat overturned. The Coast Guard and Sunny Point boat crews worked together to bring the four people aboard the 29-foot RBS and transferred them to Fort Fisher Ferry Terminal.

No injuries or pollution were reported.

“We were fortunate today’s incident turned out without any injuries, and we were glad to see other good Samaritans are ready to help," said Petty Officer 2nd Class Hayden O’Neil, coxswain for the case. "While people do utilize the local rock wall, we ask that they are mindful of the weather and tidal schedule if they are going out.”
