Coast Guard providing safety zone during Volvo Ocean Race in Newport, RI

May 13, 2015

BOSTON — The Coast Guard is enforcing a safety zone and monitoring the Volvo Ocean Race in Newport, Rhode Island through Friday.

A marked safety zone will be enforced in the East Passage of Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island.

The safety zone safeguards mariners from competing sailing vessels on the waters of the East Passage. All watercraft are prohibited from entering into, transiting through, mooring, or anchoring within this safety zone during periods of enforcement unless authorized by the Captain of the Port (COTP), Sector Southeastern New England or the COTP's designated representative.

Crews from Station Castle Hill, Newport, Rhode Island, the Coast Guard Cutter Tigershark, homeported in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, and Aids to Navigation Team Bristol, Rhode Island will enforce the safety zone.

"The Newport stopover is a highly anticipated event for the entire sailing community as the only American port of call in a grueling race around the world," said Lt. Bob Lally First Coast Guard District. "Our job is to ensure the safety of both  competitors and spectators by enforcing a security zone during all on water racing events."

Station Castle Hill is a multi-mission station which conducts: Search and Rescue, Ports Waterways and Coastal Security, Recreational Boating Safety and Fisheries Regulation, in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island.
