Coast Guard rescues 2 teens off Cape Charles, Va.

July 25, 2015

CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The Coast Guard rescued two teenagers Saturday in Cape Charles.

Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads watchstanders received a call from a good samaritan at about 5:45 p.m. stating two people, a 15-year-old male and 17-year-old female, were on an inflatable raft and struggling to get back to the beach.

A 25-foot Response Boat-Small crew launched from Coast Guard Station Cape Charles. Once on scene, the boat crew discovered the two teens were about 350 yards off the beach and the tide was going out.

"They were tired, labored from trying to make way back to the beach but they couldn’t make it back," says Petty Officer 2nd Class Matthew Barker, the coxswain during the mission.  The teens seemed hesitant to be rescued, believing they could make it on their own.  "After some discussion, we deemed it necessary to recover them and take them back to Cape Charles Harbor."

The crew pulled alongside the teens and took them aboard.  The boat crew returned to the Cape Charles City Boat Ramp and transported the two teens back to their vehicle.

There were no reported injuries.
