Coast Guard rescues 2 from vessel taking on water in Delaware Bay

PHILADELPHIA — The Coast Guard rescued two people Thursday after the boat they were on began taking on water approximately three miles west of Fortescue, New Jersey.

Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay watchstanders received notification Thursday at approximately 10 p.m. the 40-foot sailboat Velphia with two people aboard was taking on water. 

Coast Guard Station Fortescue, New Jersey, launched a 25-foot Response Boat-Small crew to assist along with the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter William Tate, a 175-foot coastal buoy tender homported in Philadelphia.

The coxswain of the 25-foot RBS deployed two crew members and a dewatering pump to assist with dewatering efforts. 

The 175-foot buoy tender crew escorted the sailboat south in the shipping channel until a crew from Coast Guard Station Cape May, New Jersey, arrived on scene and took over the escort at approximately 6 a.m.

Station Cape May escorted the vessel to Canyon Club Marina in Cape May.

No injuries or pollution were reported.
