Coast Guard rescues 3 near San Diego coast

August 8, 2015

SAN DIEGO — The Coast Guard rescued three people after their 36-foot trawler lost power approximately two miles west of Imperial Beach on Saturday.

At approximately 2:30 a.m., Friday watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector San Diego received a call of an overdue vessel from the sister of one of the mariners. She stated that she had lost communication with her brother's vessel and at the time of her last contact with him, they were without power and had lost communications.

A crew from Station San Diego launched a 45-foot motor life boat after watchstanders were able to estimate a last known location using cellular phone signals. Upon arriving on scene, the station crew was able to confirm the overdue vessel was without power. The crew took the vessel in tow and moored them safely at Marina Cortez at 7 a.m. The mariners were seasick but uninjured.

The Coast Guard is committed to protecting the safety of life at sea and urges the community to report any overdue vessels at (619)295-3121.
