Coast Guard rescues 3 from sailboat 40 miles offshore in Gulf of Mexico

March 19, 2016

HOUSTON — The Coast Guard is responding to a disabled and adrift 41-foot sailing vessel with two adults and one teenager aboard, 40 miles south of High Island, Bolivar Peninsula, Texas, Saturday morning.

The captain of the sailing vessel, Homer Odyssey, called Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston watchstanders via VHF-FM channel 16, reporting the vessel had lost engine power, the mast was down, and they were drifting toward severe weather, at about 6:30 a.m.

Watchstanders directed the launch of a Coast Guard Station Sabine 45-foot response boat crew and, after losing radio communications with the sailing vessel, dispatched a Coast Guard Air Station Houston MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew at 9:16 a.m.

The crew from Station Sabine arrived on scene  at 10:19 a.m. and put the disabled vessel in tow. The vessel and it's passengers will be transferred to a Coast Guard Station Galveston boat crew.

The three people aboard the disabled vessel are reported to be wearing life jackets and no injuries are reported.
