Coast Guard rescues 4 people aboard sailboat 3 miles west of Cape Charles, VA

April 2, 2016

CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The Coast Guard rescued four people from their sailboat Friday night three miles west of Cape Charles.

Watchstanders at Sector Hampton Roads received a report at approximately 7 p.m. Friday that a 30-foot sailboat out of Hampton was disabled and beset by weather with two men and two women aboard.

A 25-foot Response Boat-Small crew from Coast Guard Station Cape Charles launched at approximately 8 p.m.  The boat crew transferred a crew member to the sailboat who assisted the sailboat passengers in setting a tow. The crew towed the sailboat to Cape Charles Harbor and moored up at 9:08 p.m.

“We advise those in the sailing community to always make sure to check the weather before you take sail for a long trip,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Christopher Schadt, coxswain for the case. “Thankfully, our crew’s training in rough weather assured the passengers a successful tow back to shore before the situation got worse.”

No injuries or pollution were reported.
