Coast Guard rescues disabled Canadian lobster boat

March 28, 2016

BOSTON — A Coast Guard crew towed a 52-foot Canadian flagged lobster boat with two people aboard to port Monday after it became disabled two miles southwest of Halfway Rock, Maine.

At approximately 11:15 a.m. the captain of the Megan and Michael III contacted watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Northern New England’s command center reporting his vessel had lost all power and was adrift. The Megan Michael III had recently been sold to an American buyer and was transiting to Portland, Maine to be transferred to the new owner.

The watchstanders issued a marine assistance request broadcast soliciting assistance from good Samaritans or commercial tow companies in the area. After the broadcast went unanswered a 47-foot motor lifeboat crew from Station South Portland was launched to assist.

The 47-foot motor lifeboat crew arrived on scene at approximately 1:30 p.m. and quickly put the lobster boat in tow.

After a two hour-long tow, the Coast Guard crew safely brought the Megan and Michael III to DeMillo’s Pier in Portland, Maine.

“The boat crew launched quickly, hooked up tow, and brought them back to the land safely” said Chris Berry, an operations unit controller at Sector Northern New England’s command center. He said the boat crew boarded the vessel and found no violations.
