Coast Guard rescues man from water near Pier 52 in Seattle

December 14, 2015

SEATTLE — Coast Guard personnel rescued a man from the water near Colman Dock in downtown Seattle Monday.

A crew aboard a 29-foot Response Boat-Small II from Coast Guard Station Seattle pulled the man from the water and safely transferred him to emergency medical service personnel waiting at Station Seattle.

“With air and water temperature this low, every second in the water counts,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Daniel Durso, operations unit controller at Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound. “Thanks to the high level of cooperation across local agencies and the maritime community, we were able to locate, rescue and get this man to the care he needed.”

Watchstanders at Sector Puget Sound received the initial call from someone on the pier at 5:30 a.m. and put out an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast while the boat crew launched from Station Seattle.

The crew of the King County water taxi Sally Fox responded to the UMIB and located the man but was unable to retrieve him.

The man was reportedly hypothermic and taken by EMS to Harborview Medical Center.

Weather on scene was an air temperature of 41 F and water temperature of 52 F, with 5 mph winds.
