Coast Guard rescues overdue boaters

April 5, 2016

NEW ORLEANS– The Coast Guard rescued two people from a 17-foot recreational vessel that ran aground near South Pass, Tuesday. There were no injuries reported. The Coast Guard was notified by a spouse when the men failed to return from their fishing trip at about 7:30 p.m. Monday. Coast Guard Sector New Orleans watchstanders directed the launch of an MH-65C Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans shortly after notification. The helicopter rescue crew located the grounded vessel on an island near South Pass and safely rescued both men on board at about 7:15 a.m. To drastically reduce time it takes the Coast Guard to locate people in distress, boaters should file a float plan prior to getting underway, which outlines where they are going and when they will return, and carry the proper safety equipment, such as life jackets, a radio or cell phone, sound producing device and flares.
