WARRENTON, Ore. — A Coast Guard air crew rescued three men who became stranded after walking about a mile out onto the Columbia River South Jetty, Thursday.
An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Astoria in Warrenton hoisted the men and safely transported to them to emergency medical personnel for evaluation at the station.
“We highly advise anyone to stay off and away from the jetties as the three men ended up stranded due to high waves crashing over the area,” said Mark Dobney, command duty officer at Coast Guard Sector Columbia River. “There is currently a rough bar advisory for the Columbia River Bar in affect, adding to the importance of checking the weather before venturing out on or near the water.”
Watchstanders at Sector Columbia River received a report at 4 p.m. of three people stranded on the jetty. The Jayhawk crew and two 47-foot Motor Life Boat crews from Coast Guard Station Cape Disappointment in Ilwaco, Washington, responded. Once on scene, the MLB crew stood by in the event any of the men got washed off the jetty.
The men were reportedly fishing.
Weather on scene was overcast with 17 to 23 mph winds and up to 10 to up to 14-foot high seas, with a 50 F air temperature and 52 F water temperature.
