Coast Guard rescues two distressed surfers near Gray Whale Cove State Beach

SAN FRANCISCO — The Coast Guard rescued two distressed surfers at Gray Whale Cove State Beach Saturday afternoon.At approximately 3:04 p.m., Coast Guard Sector San Francisco watchstanders received a report from a good Samaritan that there were two surfers in distress drifting north from Montara State Beach towards Gray Whale Cove State Beach. An Urgent Marine Information Broadcast was immediately issued. A rescue boatcrew from Coast Guard Station Golden Gate and a rescue helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco were launched.The rescue helicopter crew located both surfers at Gray Whale Cove State Beach and lowered a rescue swimmer to assess their medical condition. The helicopter crew took one surfer directly to Stanford Medical Center with possible signs of hypothermia for further evaluation while the other surfer was transferred to local emergency medical services.“Northern California waters can be very dangerous this time of year," said Capt. Greg Stump, commander, Sector San Francisco.  "We highly encourage all who recreate on or near the water to check weather conditions before going out and to always tell someone where you are going and when you are expected to return.“Incidents on the water can happen quickly and unexpectedly. It is important to always know your limitations when out on the water.
