Coast Guard rescues unconscious mariner near Northport Bay, New York

June 30, 2015

NEW YORK - The Coast Guard rescued a mariner who had been knocked unconscious while aboard a sailing vessel near the Northport Yacht Club, New York, Tuesday. At approximately 7 p.m., Coast Guard Station Eaton’s Neck overheard a report of a mariner calling Northport Yacht Club in regards to his crewmember going overboard after being struck in the forehead by the vessel’s boom. Coast Guard crewmembers aboard a 25-foot Rescue Boat-Small arrived on scene. They located the person who was face down in the water without a lifejacket on, bleeding from a laceration on the forehead. Crewmembers took the mariner aboard and transported him to Northport Town Dock where local Emergency Medical Services arrived on scene and took him to Huntington Hospital. “The victim was face down in the water without a life jacket and started to inhale large amounts of water, causing him to start sinking,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Jovan Morales, a boatswain’s mate stationed at Eaton’s Neck. “Luckily, another person was able to grab hold of him until we got there. Had he been wearing a life jacket, he could have stayed afloat on his own, possibly stopping him from inhaling so much water. You never know when an accident can happen, but you can be prepared for it.”He is currently listed in stable condition.
