SAN FRANCISCO — A Coast Guard aircrew responded to a boater in distress south of Dumbarton Bridge Thursday evening.

At approximately 7 p.m., Coast Guard Sector San Francisco received notifications from California Highway Patrol of an injured boater aboard a grounded vessel near Dumbarton Bridge.

Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco aircrew diverted from training to the boater’s location. A Coast Guard rescue swimmer was lowered down to the boat to assist the injured boater. The boater requested to stay aboard until high tide where he could safely transit to a local marina. The aircrew lowered a basket filled with a hypothermic blanket, several wool blankets, food, water and a radio to stay in communication with Sector San Francisco until the boater arrived safely to shore.

Coast Guard maintained communication with the boater throughout the night until he reported safely to shor at approximately midnight.

“The Coast Guard advises all mariners to carry the essential safety equipment aboard their vessel to included a marine radio, lifejacket, flares and to also check the weather reports prior to going out on the water,” said Lt. Jason Berger, Sector San Francisco command duty officer. “Also, all mariners should have blankets and extra food and water aboard your vessel for emergencies.”
