Coast Guard resumes search for missing Cuban migrant off Boca Raton

July 21, 2016

MIAMI — The Coast Guard resumed its search Thursday for a Cuban migrant reported missing off the Boca Raton coast.

A body washed ashore Thursday in Town of Gulf Stream, and Coast Guard watchstanders launched a boat crew from Station Lake Worth and a Air Station Miami MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew to resume searching for a Cuban migrant reportedly missing since sunset Tuesday.

On Wednesday, the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Gannett rescued six Cuban migrants from the water.  The migrants were spotted by the cutter crew while transiting the area during a patrol. Coast Guard crews searched more than 1,530 square nautical miles before suspending the initial search Wednesday evening.

"Our search efforts Wednesday were based on unreliable and unconfirmed information," said Chris Eddy, search and rescue specialist for the 7th District. "After searching the area under ideal search conditions, with multiple Coast Guard assets, we called off the search pending any new information.  With the discovery of the body in Town of Gulf Stream, we have relaunched our search efforts."
