Coast Guard searches for man swept from break wall in southern Lake Michigan

September 20, 2015

CLEVELAND — Coast Guard crews are searching for a 24-year-old-man who was among six people swept from a Michigan City, Indiana, break wall by a wave Saturday evening.

The man's name and the name of those rescued are not being released and there is no Coast Guard video or imagery available for this case.

Just before 6:30 p.m., CDT, a boat crew from Coast Guard Station Michigan City, aboard a 25-foot response boat, spotted two people in the water near the Michigan City break wall while on a patrol. The crew rescued both people and found that they were part of a group of six that had been swept from the break wall.

Three other members of the group were rescued by local responders, while one remains missing.

An air crew from Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City, Michigan, was launched to assist in the search. The response boat crew had to return to base due to on-scene weather and was replaced by another crew aboard a larger 45-foot response boat.

Local law enforcement searched the shoreline.

Crews continued to search during the night, replacing one another as the crews reached their fatigue limits.

Early this morning, crews from the Indiana Department of Natural Resource arrived on scene to conduct diving operations.

Involved in the search are: Coast Guard Station Michigan City, Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City, Coast Guard Air Station Detroit, Indiana DNR and other local agencies.

More information will be released as it becomes available.
