Coast Guard suspends search for 2 fishermen near Coos Bay, Ore.

January 20, 2016

WARRENTON, Ore. — The Coast Guard suspended the search at 2 p.m. for two fishermen who went missing after the fishing vessel Eagle III broke up along North Jetty near Coos Bay, Wednesday.

"With deep regret the Coast Guard has suspended the search for the two remaining fisherman from the fishing vessel Eagle III," said Capt. Michael Trimpert, sector commander, Coast Guard Sector North Bend. "I speak for all of our Coast Guard men and women that stand the watch on the Southern Oregon coast when I say our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those we have lost."

Two 47-foot Motor Life Boats from Coast Guard Station Coos Bay, as well as MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crews from Air Station North Bend and Air Facility Newport, covered more than 50 square miles and traveled over 760 miles while searching the North and South Jetties, the North Spit, Coos Bay and a large section of the Pacific Ocean near the entrance of Coos Bay.

The cause of the incident is under joint investigation between the Coast Guard and Coos Country Sheriff's office.
