April 17, 2016

SAN FRANCISCO — The Coast Guard suspended search efforts for two missing teen boys who were swept out to sea near Ocean Beach late Saturday afternoon.

After approximately five hours of conducting extensive multi-agency searches of a 54-square-mile area, the search was suspended.

Rescue crews assisting were:

  • Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco
  • Coast Guard Station Golden Gate
  • Coast Guard Cutter Sockeye
  • U.S. Park Police
  • San Francisco Fire Department

At approximately 4:22 p.m., Coast Guard Sector San Francisco watchstanders received a report from San Francisco Fire Department of two teen boys in the water near the south windmill on Ocean Beach. It was determined that a group of five teen boys were swept out to sea. Three out of the five were able to make it back to shore, and were transported to local hospitals. The other two 16-year-old boys remain missing.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the missing persons," said Capt. Greg Stump, commander, Coast Guard Sector San Francisco. "We want to thank all of our partner agencies who assisted with search efforts for their dedication and service to the public."

Search is suspended pending further developments.
