Coast Guard suspends search for missing man off Port Aransas

July 6, 2015

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Coast Guard crews have suspended their search for a 21-year-old man who went missing near Horace Caldwell Pier in Port Aransas, Monday.

"Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the missing man,” said Lt. Osvaldo Vera, a Coast Guard Sector Corpus Christi search and rescue coordinators. “Suspending a search is a very difficult decision to make and is done with great care and deliberation."

Watchstanders with Sector Corpus Christi coordinated the search, Saturday, for the 21-year-old man after receiving reports that he did not return after swimming near the pier with two others.

The Coast Guard joined the search with lifeguards and Port Aransas Police Department, after being notified at 3:30 p.m., on the 4th of July.  Rescue crews searched for more than 62 hours covering more than 1,500 square miles.

"I want to thank the community of Port Aransas for the wonderful support they’ve provided to the family in this very difficult situation and offer my heartfelt thoughts and prayers to the family during these very difficult times," said Capt. Tony Hahn, commander, Sector Corpus Christi.
