Coast Guard suspends search near Tillamook Bay, Ore.

October 2, 2015

WARRENTON, Ore. — The Coast Guard suspended the search for a possible second person in the water after confirming the man was alone when his vessel capsized off North Jetty near Tillamook Bay, Thursday around 11 p.m.

Gresham Police officials spoke with a family member of the vessel operator who confirmed that he was the only one who could have been aboard when the vessel capsized. A decision was made to suspend the search after finding no signs of further distress.

"It's with thanks to the efforts of local law enforcement that we were able to determine no one else was in the water," said Petty Officer 1st Class Starr Franklin, the operations unit controller at Sector Columbia River. "As we treat every report as a matter of life and death, these strong agency partnerships enable us to make knowledgable determinations so our members and assets are ready and available for that next call."

Coast Guard and local response crews searched for 11.5 hours and covered more than 65 square miles during search efforts.
