Coast Guard WWII hero honored in Cle Elum, Wash.

The Douglas Munro Memorial Ceremony was held in Cle Elum, Wash., near his grave at Laurel Hills Memorial Cemetery Sept. 27, 2016. 

The ceremony coincided with the announcement that the Coast Guard’s sixth national security cutter, Munro, will be commissioned April 1, 2017, at the Smith Cove Cruise Terminal in Seattle.

The wall pays tribute to Douglas Munro, the only Coast Guardsmen to receive the Medal of Honor.

Seaman Richards signs the guest book for a traveling Douglas Munro exhibit that was provided by Dale Nitz, curator of the Veterans Living History Museum in Port Orchard, Wash., as part of a ceremony honoring Munro at the Laurel Hills Memorial Cemetery Sept. 27, 2016.

The ceremony is held every year around the anniversary of Munro’s death on the Guadalcanal, where he was mortally wounded while voluntarily evacuating a detachment of U.S. Marines under attack from a larger force.
