Coast Guardsmen attend third-annual Jacksonville Women’s Leadership Symposium

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Coast Guardsmen from Jacksonville-area units, along with members of the other military branches and local agencies, attended the third-annual Jacksonville Women’s Leadership Symposium, Wednesday.

The theme for this year’s event was Embracing Differences.

The purpose of the symposium is for professionals from military, local agencies, national organizations and companies to discuss principles, experiences, and ideas in an effort to improve leadership skills.

Key speakers included retired Brig. Gen. Michael Fleming, Army National Guard, and Donna Fiedorowicz, retired senior vice president of the PGA Tour.

In addition to the guest speakers, the event included two separate panels to discuss relevant topics and a question and answer period. The first panel, labeled the Generational Leadership Panel, discussed generational challenges faced in the workplace, along with leadership characteristics that transcend generations. This panel included: Heather Downs, a sociology professor from Jacksonville University; Master Chief Petty Officer Teri M. McIntyre, the command master chief from Naval Air Station Jacksonville; Gail A. Patin, the chief operating officer for Hubbard House, Inc.; and Lt. Joshua Schwartz, the commanding officer of the Coast Guard Cutter Diamondback.

A second group on the Gender Differences Panel discussed the different leadership styles of men and women, along with gender challenges that may be faced in the workplace. Speakers in this group included Master Chief Petty Officer Leilani L. Cale-Jones, deputy Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard; Lt. Sharon M. Scott of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office; Tracy B. Raulerson, senior energy manager for Siemens; Marilyn Solorzano, owner of the Miss Marilyn Louise Inc., Shrimping Fleet; and Master Chief Petty Officer Jason D. Griffin, Coast Guard 7th District command master chief.
