WARRENTON, Ore. — Coast Guard crews rescued three people after their vessel ran aground on Sand Island, Wash., Thursday.
An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Astoria transferred the boaters to Station Cape Disappointment, in Ilwaco, Wash., with no reported injuries at 12:35 p.m.
One of the boaters on the 16-foot pleasure craft contacted Station Cape Disappointment at 11:30 a.m., reporting that the vessel was disabled, taking on water and being pushed ashore by waves. Rescue boat crews launched aboard a 29-foot Response Boat-Small II and 47-foot Motor Lifeboat. Two Jayhawk aircrews, already in the air, were diverted to provide assistance.
Shallow water prevented the boat crews from reaching the grounded vessel. One of the Jayhawk aircrews was able to safely land on Sand Island and embark the three people. There was no reported pollution and the vessel’s owner has contracted a marine salvage company to remove it from the island.
On-scene weather was reported to be 3-foot seas, 10-mph winds, an air temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit and water temperature of 58 degrees Fahrenheit.
