Missing swimmer found safe

August 17, 2015

CHICAGO — Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan received confirmation this morning that a missing swimmer the Coast Guard and Chicago Police and Fire Departments were searching for overnight, has been found safe at his residence.

There is no Coast Guard imagery at this time and the Coast Guard is not releasing the name of the individual.

At about 11 P.M. Sunday, watchstanders at the Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan Command Center in Milwaukee received notification from a woman, via Chicago 911, stating that her friend went swimming in Lake Michigan and had not returned. The missing swimmer, in his early 20s, was last seen in the water at the Ohio Street Beach near Café Olivia.

The Coast Guard issued a Urgent Marine Information Broadcast and launched a rescue crew from Coast Guard Station (Small) Chicago, located near Navy Pier. In addition, a rescue crew aboard a Dolphin helicopter responded from Coast Guard Air Facility Muskegon.

Coast Guard crews searched on the water and from the air throughout the night. Chicago Police and Fire Departments were also involved in the search.

Throughout the night, watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan left several messages with the reporting source. At approximately 8:30 A.M., the Coast Guard received a call from the woman stating that the missing person was safe at home.

The Coast Guard notified the Chicago Police Marine Unit of the report, who subsequently sent detectives to the home of the missing swimmer to verify it was indeed the missing person. Once verification was complete, the Coast Guard called off the search.
