Multimedia Release: Coast Guard ensures safety during Columbia Cup Races in Kennewick, Wash.

Lt. Cmdr. Laura Springer, from Marine Safety Unit Portland, Ore., explains why the Coast Guard is patrolling and enforcing safety zones on the Columbia River during the Columbia Cup hydroplane races being held in Kennewick, Wash., July 24 to 26, 2015.

The Coast Guard partnered with Washington state and local law enforcement to enforce a safety zone that surrounded the hydroplane race course in the Columbia River Basin helping to ensure the safety of on-water spectators.
