MULTIMEDIA RELEASE: Coast Guard remembers USS Narcissus near Egmont Key, Fla.

January 15, 2015

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Crewmembers from the Coast Guard Cutter Vise placed a reef ball memorial near Egmont Key, Florida on Thursday, marking the wreckage of the USS Narcissus.

The Narcissus was en route to New York state from Pensacola, Florida on Jan. 4. 1866 when it ran aground and sank with all crew aboard. The ship is known for its presence in the Civil War.

The reef ball is marked with a memorial plaque commemorating the Narcissus and its crew. The plaque requests people to respect the military grave site.

“I am honored to take part in this memorial,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Joseph Juiliano, a crewmember aboard the Vise. “There is no greater sacrifice a man or woman serving their country can give. Today is a special day for our crew to be a part of the rich history of this country and our military brotherhood."

The Vise is a 75-foot Construction Tender homeported at Sector St. Petersburg, Florida.
