New Captain takes charge of Coast Guard Sector Northern New England

BOSTON — Capt. Michael A. Baroody assumed the duties and responsibilities as commanding officer of Coast Guard Sector Northern New England from Capt. Brian S. Gilda during a change of command ceremony in Portland, Maine, Thursday.

Rear Adm. Linda L. Fagan, commander of the 1st Coast Guard District, presided over the change of command ceremony, a time-honored military tradition which formally represents a total transfer of responsibility, authority, and accountability from one leader to the next and reflects the dedication of free men and women serving their nation proudly.

Baroody reports to Coast Guard Sector Northern New England from Sector Houston-Galveston, Texas, where he served as the Deputy Commander.

Following the change of command ceremony, Gilda was awarded a Meritorious Service Medal by Rear Adm. Fagan.  Next, Gilda will report as the Chief of Prevention for the 13th Coast Guard District.

Sector Northern New England encompasses Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and Eastern New York. In an average year, the crews at Sector Northern New England conduct 440 search and rescue cases, save 25 lives, assist 656 people in distress and act in response to 680 pollution cases.
