PHOTO RELEASE: Coast Guard crew, family members, clean up Shackleford Banks

June 12, 2015

PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Crewmembers of the Coast Guard Cutter Elm participated in a beach cleanup, June 12, at Shackleford Banks, North Carolina.

15 crewmembers, two family members and a National Park Service ranger worked together to remove more then 150 pounds of trash during a two-hour period.

The participants used three personal boats to travel from from Coast Guard Sector Field Office Fort Macon to the Shackleford Banks.

"The crew has been working hard lately getting Elm prepared for her upcoming patrol.  This was a great break from that and we got to help the community clean up one of the area's most precious islands," said Ensign Bradley Pienta, the Elm's morale officer. "Not to mention it was a great start to the weekend!"

The Coast Guard Cutter Elm is a 225-foot sea-going buoy tender homeported in Fort Macon, North Carolina.
