March 7, 2016

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. — The U.S. Coast Guard worked with members from more than two dozen agencies during a full-scale mass-rescue exercise in Waiska Bay in Brimley, Michigan, Saturday.

The exercise involved a simulated commercial plane crash into Waiska Bay and was designed to coordinate response between multiple state, local, federal, tribal and international agencies and first responders.

A rescue helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City, Michigan, conducted a simulated medical evacuation, and members of the Michigan State Police Dive Team retrieved a simulated aircraft black box from beneath the ice.

The exercise began at 9:30 a.m. and was completed by 12 p.m. Local residents and members of the media observed.
