NEW YORK - Coast Guard crewmembers at Station New York assisted a disabled fishing vessel in Red Bank Reach today. At approximately 3 p.m., Coast Guard Station New York crewmembers aboard a 29-foot Response Boat Small (RB-S II) received a distress call via VHF Channel 16 from the fishing vessel Tom’s Thumb. The vessel was dragging anchor 200 yards off Red Bank Reach, near the southern tip of Staten Island. Three mariners were aboard and they reported the vessel was drifting toward rocks and taking on water due to rough sea conditions. The Station New York crew quickly arrived on scene within 15 minutes and took Tom’s Thumb in tow. “We knew the seas were rough around that area, with three to four foot waves,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael Lees, a boatswain’s mate at Station New York. “We were nearby doing a routine patrol and made it to the scene as fast as we could. Station New York prides itself on the quick response time of it’s personnel.”The fishing vessel was moored at Tottenville Marine. No injuries were reported.
