Update 10: Response to collision near Columbus

Paducah, Ky. – Recovery operations to remove clarified slurry oil from the Mississippi River near Columbus, Ky. have been completed as of Sept. 24, 2015.An environmental clamshell equipped with precision dredge positioning software removed an estimated 3392 tons of dewatered oily sediment.The eleven-day operation focused on the recovery of clarified slurry oil spilled as a result of a Sept. 2, 2015 vessel collision near Mile Marker 937 on the Lower Mississippi River.The recovery operations targeted the two areas of spilled oil identified by high-resolution side scan sonar near the incident site. A final side scan sonar assessment verified removal in accordance with the approved plan. A final decontamination and demobilization of equipment used during the operations will begin Sept. 27, 2015.The cause of the incident is still under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board and the Coast Guard.
