Update: Coast Guard, partners searching for overdue boater near Wrangell, Alaska

November 18, 2015

JUNEAU, Alaska — The Coast Guard ended its four day search for an overdue boater after Alaska State Troopers and Wrangell Search and Rescue located the body of the missing boater near Wrangell, Alaska, Wednesday.

The man was located deceased in the vicinity of Earl West Cove south of Madan Bay.

The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Anacapa, MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crews from Air Station Sitka and Coast Guard Station Ketchikan 45-foot Response Boat–Medium crews, along with partner agencies, searched for the boater since Sunday.

Despite significant winter weather conditions, a total of seven assets conducted 83 hours of searches and covered 3,040 square nautical miles since the report was initially received on Sunday.

“There is no greater mission for the Coast Guard than to protect and preserve lives at sea,” said Capt. Shannan Greene, commander, Sector Juneau. “We had hoped for a better outcome. Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of this long time mariner.”
