UPDATE: Coast Guard, responding agencies continue oil release clean up, investigation

September 30, 2015

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Coast Guard pollution responders determined Wednesday that the Lady St. Johns, a retired passenger boat, is no longer discharging oil into the St. Johns River.

Currently, Moran Environmental Recovery is working with divers from Logan Diving & Salvage to remove the remainder of the fuel from the vessel and is working to clean up the oil from the impacted area.

Salvage of the vessel will be conducted by the owner in a coordinated plan with the city of Jacksonville.

Coast Guard watchstanders at Sector Jacksonville received the initial report of the release at approximately 7 p.m., Tuesday, stating that the Lady St. Johns was listing to one side and a sheen was spotted around the vessel. Upon receiving the report, the National Response Center was notified and pollution investigators from Sector Jacksonville were dispatched to the scene to assist members of the Jacksonville Fire Department and Jacksonville Waterways Manager.

The cause of the release is under investigation.
