UPDATE: Coast Guard suspends search for missing kayaker off Folly Island, South Carolina

FOLLY ISLAND, S.C. — The Coast Guard has suspended its search for a missing kayaker off the coast of Folly Island, at approximately 4 p.m., Monday, pending any new developments.

The Coast Guard has been searching since Saturday evening when Dean Britt, 22 years old, and Logan Brown, 21 years old, were reported missing. Logan Brown was located alive on Sunday afternoon approximately two miles off Kiawah Island.

Coast Guard search efforts covered more than 2,800 square miles in cooperation with more than 15 state and local agencies.

“Suspending a search is never an easy decision to make," said Capt. Gary Tomasulo, commander, Coast Guard Sector Charleston. "We will stand by the family during this difficult time and offer them any support we can. I'd also like the public to understand that anytime we undertake a search it is always a collective effort of federal, state, and local partners working together.”Coast Guard crews aboard the following assets were involved in the search:

  • HC-130 Hercules airplanes from Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater, Florida
  • MH-65 Dolphin helicopters from Air Station Savannah, Georgia
  • 45-foot Response Boats—Medium and 29-foot Response Boats—Small from Coast Guard Station Charleston
  • Coast Guard Auxiliary boats and aircraft
  • The 87-foot Coast Guard Cutter Yellowfin, homeported in Charleston
  • The 87-foot Cutter Chinook, homeported in Tybee Island, Georgia

  • Rescue Squad
  • Folly Beach Public Safety
  • Folly Beach Police and Fire Departments

  • Sullivan's Island Fire and Rescue
