Update: Coast Guard suspends search for missing man near Kaloli Point, Hawai'i

HONOLULU — The Coast Guard suspended the search Sunday, for a 51-year-old man swept out to sea while fishing near Kaloli Point, Hawai'i, Saturday.

“The suspension of an active search and rescue case is an incredibly difficult decisions to make,” said Lt. Kevin Edes, command center chief at Coast Guard Sector Honolulu. “We worked closely with the Hawai'i County Fire Department and saturated the area in an attempt to locate the man but, pending further developments, we have decided to suspend the active search. Our prayers go out to his family and friends.”Assets that participated in the search are crews aboard the USCGC Kittiwake, an 87-foot coastal patrol boat homeported in Honolulu, and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Barbers Point. Hawai'i County Fire Department searched with divers, a helicopter, jet ski, and rescue boat crews.

On-scene assets completed 10 sorties, searched a total of 124 square miles and deployed one self-locating datum marker buoys.Watchstanders at the Sector Honolulu Command Center received notification from the Hawaii Fire Department of the situation at 2:20 p.m. Saturday. The man was last seen wearing a blue shirt and gray and green shorts.
