Update: Coast Guard suspends search for missing swimmer near Manhattan beach

April 20, 2016

LOS ANGELES — At 8:25 a.m., the Coast Guard suspended the search for a missing swimming near Manhattan Beach.

The Coast Guard launched several assets to assist with the search of a swimmer after he was reported missing Tuesday, April 19, 2016. Assets included Coast Guard Cutter Halibut, homeported in Marina del Rey, a MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station Los Angeles and a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew from Station Los Angeles.

Searches were conducted throughout the night, as well as a first light search at 6:15 a.m., Wednesday, by a MH-65 Dolphin Helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Los Angeles.

Los Angeles County Sheriffs Dive Team will continue to conduct dive operations.

"It is always a difficult decision to end an active search, however, Coast Guard crews saturated the area for 16 hours in search for the missing swimmer," said Capt. Jennifer Williams, commanding officer, Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach.

The missing individual was reported to be wearing grey shorts and did not have a lifejacket.

If anyone has information on the location of the missing swimmer, contact Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles/Long Beach Command Center at (310) 521-3801.
