UPDATE: One of two missing boaters rescued off Altamaha Sound, Georgia

May 15, 2016

ALTAMAHA SOUND, Ga. — One of two missing boaters was rescued by a Coast Guard helicopter crew, Sunday, approximately 12 miles east of Altamaha Sound.

A Coast Guard Air Station Savannah helicopter crew spotted Cliff Morgan, one of the two boaters, clinging to the overturned 19-foot white center console pleasure craft.

The crew deployed a rescue swimmer and hoisted Cliff at approximately 2:20 p.m. He was taken to shore and transferred to EMS for evaluation.

Crews continue to search for Charles Morgan, 61.

The Coast Guard was notified of the situation by Charles’ girlfriend at 10:10 a.m. The initial report stated the two had departed Saturday at 7 a.m., and were due to return in the evening. Members of the local police department and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources arrived at the launch point and reported their truck and trailer were still there.

A crew aboard a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium from Coast Guard Station Brunswick and a crew aboard an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Station were launched to search.

Other agencies involved in the search include members of Georgia DNR and McIntosh County Sheriff’s Office.
