UPDATE: Search ends for 2 men missing near Halona Blowhole

HONOLULU — Coast Guard crews ended their search for two men swept out to sea near Halona Blowhole Lookout, Sunday.

Divers from Honolulu Fire Department recovered one of the missing men unresponsive Sunday morning. The second man was found by bystanders at a nearby beach and was recovered by HFD personnel Sunday evening.

"Our deepest condolences go out to the families and friends of these two men," said Petty Officer 1st Class Tyler Peterson, operations search and rescue planner at Sector Honolulu Command Center. 

On-scene crews searched for approximately 25 hours and covered 243 square miles.

Involved in the search were a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew from Coast Guard Station Honolulu, an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station Barbers Point and the crew of Coast Guard Cutter Kittiwake, an 87-foot coastal patrol boat homeported in Honolulu.

A rescue boat, dive team and helicopter crew from HFD as well as a jet ski crew from Ocean Safety assisted in the search. An MH-60R Navy helicopter crew from Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 37 also assisted.

Watchstanders at the Coast Guard Sector Honolulu Command Center received notification from the Honolulu Fire Department at 5:07 p.m. Saturday of the situation. The two men were last seen at approximately 5 p.m.
