BOSTON — The Coast Guard medically evacuated a 49-year-old-female Sunday off Cape Cod.

Watchstanders at the 1st Coast Guard District's command center received a call Sunday at about 9 a.m. from the cruise ship Norwegian Gem requesting a medevac of a 49-year-old woman suffering from possible internal injuries.

An Air Station Cape Cod MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew launched shortly before 10 a.m. and arrived on scene at approximately 11 a.m, at which time they hoisted the woman from the deck of the cruise ship.

The Jayhawk crew brought the woman to Barnstable Municipal Airport at around noon where her care was transferred to local Emergency Medical Services personnel. She was last reported to be in stable condition.

“This is the second medevac Air Station Cape Cod has conducted today,” said Lt. Cmdr. Scott Higbee, 1st Coast Guard District’s command center chief. “Visibility was limited due to the weather, but thanks to the professionalism of the Norwegian Gem’s, crew the medevac was a success.”

Air Station Cape Cod is responsible for the waters from New Jersey to the Canadian border.

The Norwegian Gem is a 965-foot cruise ship homeported out of Nassau, Bahamas.
