Coast Guard rescues overdue hiker near Craig, Alaska

July 4, 2015

JUNEAU, Alaska — A Coast Guard Air Station Sitka MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew rescued an overdue hiker near Waterfall Creek, 10 miles south of Craig, Friday.

The helicopter crew found the 22-year-old man, who lost his way while returning from an overnight camping trip, and transported him safely back to his lodging.

Coast Guard Sector Juneau command center watchstanders received a request to help in the search from Alaska State Troopers Friday evening. Watchstanders directed the launch of the Jayhawk crew to assist in the search from above.

The aircrew located the man when they spotted his flashlight on a nearby ridge, approximately two miles from the trail.

“Before enjoying Alaska’s wilderness, makes sure to properly prepare with supplies for longer than the intended trip and necessary survival gear,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Wes Shipley, a Sector Juneau watchstander. “We recommend filing a plan for where you will be heading and to travel with someone who knows the terrain.”

The man was located in good condition and did not require medical attention.
