Officials searching Lake Michigan for teen thrown from boat

June 20, 2016

HOLLAND, Mich. — Search efforts by the United States Coast Guard, Ottawa County Sheriff Department and Holland Fire Department are ongoing in the water a quarter mile off Holland for a missing 16-year-old boy.

The names of those involved in the case are not being released and there is no imagery or video available for this case.

At approximately 8 p.m. EDT Sunday, a 16-year-old male, wearing a brown shirt and grey shorts, was thrown into the waters of Lake Michigan after the vessel he was aboard capsized during a high-speed turn.

Another passenger was also ejected from the boat but was quickly rescued by a local good Samaritan. Neither person was wearing a life jacket.

The Coast Guard, the Ottawa County Sheriff Department and Holland Fire Department searched throughout the night using helicopters, boats, and a dive team attempting to locate the missing teen. Resources remain on scene and responders are continuing to conduct an extensive search.

"Multiple Coast Guard crews from units across southern Lake Michigan are working tirelessly to locate the missing boy," said Cmdr. Carolyn Moberley, the Coast Guard’s search and rescue coordinator for this search. "Additionally, a great working relationship with local partner agencies allows for maximum local resources devoted to this response."
