Coast Guard suspends search for missing fisherman in La Jolla (photos, video available)

SAN DIEGO — The Coast Guard has suspended its active search, pending further developments, at 5:24 p.m., Thursday, for a missing fisherman off the coast of La Jolla, California.

Multiple rescue crews searched more than 204 square miles with no sign of the missing man.

At approximately 6 p.m. Wednesday, watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector San Diego received a report that five men fishing for lobster at Windansea Beach, in La Jolla, had been caught in the surf after their 25-foot boat capsized. Four fishermen were rescued by lifeguards and one remained missing. The rescued four were reported to be wearing lifejackets.

Searching were crews from:

  • Sector San Diego MH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter
  • Coast Guard Forward Operating Base Point Mugu MH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter
  • Station San Diego 45-foot Response boat-medium
  • The Coast Guard Cutter Sea Otter
  • The Coast Guard Cutter Petrel
  • Customs and Border Protection, Air and Marine Operations aircraft
  • San Diego Sheriff's Office
  • San Diego Fire Department
  • San Diego Lifeguards

Some of the rescued men were taken to Scripps Memorial hospital, in La Jolla, then released.
