NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard is responding to a barge collision between two towing vessels near mile marker 129 on the Mississippi River near Hahnville, Louisiana.  The Mississippi River has been closed from mile marker 126 to mile marker 131.   The Coast Guard is working with state & local agencies and the responsible party to recover one capsized barge carrying caustic soda in an effort to reopen waterways.  There have been no reports of caustic soda entering the water.... WASHINGTON — The U.S. Coast Guard will conduct a public Marine Board of Investigation hearing into the loss of the United States-flagged steam ship EL FARO, and its 33 crewmembers.  The first hearing session will focus on the pre-accident historical events relating to the loss, the regulatory compliance record of the EL FARO, crewmember duties and qualifications, past operations of the vessel and the Coast Guard’s Search and Rescue operations.... NAGS HEAD, N.C.—The Coast Guard medevaced a 22-year-old man Tuesday aboard a fishing vessel near Oregon Inlet.  Sector North Carolina watchstanders received a call at 5:30 a.m. that a crew member aboard the 43-foot fishing vessel Sea Dog had fallen and sustained an injury to his ear. A Coast Guard 47-foot Motor Life Boat crew launched from Station Oregon Inlet at 5:48 a.m. and arrived on scene at 6:10 a.m.... [Read More]

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Coast Guard rescue crews and the crew of Good Samaritan sailing vessel rescued three French boaters from a sinking catamaran Sunday morning, approximately 25 nautical miles southeast of Mona Island, Puerto Rico. The rescued men were transiting from the Dominican Republic to the island of St. Maarten at approximately 2 a.m. Sunday when their catamaran began taking on water and started to sink.... [Read More]

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Coast Guard is responding to a barge breakaway at mile marker 501.6 near Greenville, Mississippi, Monday. The tow vessel Big J.O. struck the bank of the Mississippi River, resulting in four empty barges and two barges loaded with urea ammonium nitrate breaking loose. The Mississippi River is closed from mile marker 503 to mile marker 490. One of the loaded barges is reportedly sinking. Four barges have been secured. Good Samaritan vessels are assisting to retrieve the remaining unsecured barge.... [Read More]
